One Direction Vs Lantern on The Lake

One Direction were signed to Simon Cowell's Record label after coming third in the X factor competition in 2011. Some of contestants from the TV series get signed to the record label.  There are different types of artists on this record label from the US and UK in particular Fleur East is signed to the record label and also Little Mix.

The target audience for One Direction according to YouGov Profiles but i think that there are younger target audiences as well.

Lanterns on the lake formed as a group in 2007, they became famous by self-releasing two EPs and a single before being signed to Bella Union in 2010.


The advantages and disadvantages of being signed to a independent label:

- independent labels tend to sign who ever they like and with indie labels they aren't like major labels where they pressure the artist into changing their style to fit the charts. 
- There is smaller budgets in indie labels so there is less that a indie label can do for the artist unlike Major labels.

The advantages and disadvantages of being signed to a mainstream label:

- There is a larger budget unlike the indie label so it means the label can help the artist distribute their music much better, also they can sell more merchandise than indie label artists.
- They control the artists music and image whilst they are signed to the label.

On the internet there are so many places to find information about them not only on their own website but also on wikipedia, record labels website.

I would prefer to be signed to a indie label just for the fact i am not allowing the label to take control of my music and image i would rather be promoted as an artist who isnt trying to be like all the current chart topping artists. Also indie labels believe in your own concept which i would prefer being signed to.
